Viveka-Discrimination

 What is Viveka (विवेक)?

The rough translation of the Sanskrit word Viveka into English would be "discrimination." Here, discrimination is not used to discriminate among the various aspects or objects of the world. Viveka विवेक or the discriminatory power of a human being is used for the following:

  • to understand the interconnectedness between each and every aspect of the manifested cosmos - it could be a human being with every aspect of Cosmos - microorganisms to stellar bodies, etc.;
  • to realize that everything is same in its essence the way it is build up (five elements of nature);
  • to realize experientially (not theoretically) that everything is same and is formed or created because of thoughts and the entanglement towards those thoughts; and
  • to go beyond the thought processes and merge or become one with the thoughtless and finally melt into the unmanifest or the avyakta अव्यक्त
Viveka विवेक is used as a tool to transcend the mind, to understand the essence of Cosmos and its oneness and enter the state of Samadhi समाधि.

Who/What?

Who/What?

The title of this post itself is very intriguing, excavating and exploring.

If we look at human being's life there are various aspects that through which we gather many experiences.

In the wakefulness state we gather experiences through 14 elements:

  • 5 organs of senses (eyes, ears, nose, tongue, and skin)
  • 5 organs of action (mouth, arms, feet, excretory and reproductive organs)
  • 4 internal elements (mind, intellect, ego and chitta)
In the dream state also we gather experiences through these same 14 elements.

Surprisingly in the deep sleep state we don't gather any experiences and we are not even aware of the presence of these 14 elements. More surprisingly we become aware or we have a knowledge that we have slept deeply and feel very refreshed.

So, "who/what" is that which is present and letting us know about our experiences?

We might be under an illusion that we are experiencing so many phenomenon or various aspects of life. But, if we reflect truly and very intriguingly, then there should be something or someone who is witnessing the experiencer and the aspect of experiencing process also.

So, this kind of questioning takes us deep into an aspect where we are thrown into silence and there is no answer really in the form of an answer to our question. What exactly is happening is that we become aware of a witness being ever present and witnessing all aspects of the illusory happenings and the illusory identifications of these happenings.

Hence, this witness is the one that is eternally present and eternally free. The illusion of achieving freedom is again an illusory thought which is arising because of the illusory identifications and entanglements with the various illusory happenings.

So, in truth there is only an eternal witness that is witnessing all the illusory happenings. In summary life is a bundle of illusory happenstances with illusory identifications and illusory entanglements. When we question what/who is actually telling us that, so and so aspect of life is happening? Then with the right approach and seeing we can go beyond the happening, beyond the illusion and beyond the identification. Then, we go beyond the question and instead of finding the answer, we become the answer. In reality we are the answer already. We just need to realize that we are the answer already.

The practice is to:
  • see beyond the seeing and the non-seeing
  • hear beyond the hearing and non-hearing
  • feeling beyond the feeling and non-feeling
  • tasting beyond the tasting and non-tasting
  • smelling beyond the smelling and non-smelling
  • witnessing beyond the doing and non-doing
  • witnessing beyond the thinking, non-thinking, thought and thoughtless
  • witnessing beyond the being and non-being
  • witnessing beyond the entanglement and non-entanglement
  • witnessing beyond the identification and non-identification
  • witnessing beyond the states of wakefulness, dream and deep sleep state
  • witnessing beyond the experience, the experiencer, non-experience and the non-experiencer
  • witnessing beyond the witnessing and non-witnessing
Then the question and the questioner witnesses that in reality they are the answer and the answer is ever present witnessing eternally.

This is what we can call it as the "self" reflecting on the "Self" and realizing that it is the "Self"!

Self Awareness

Self Awareness

Introduction

The first step in achieving Emotional Intelligence is to become aware of our self which in short is called as self-awareness. However, it is not so easy.

The self awareness aspect consists two parts:

  1. Self-regard: Accepting and respecting our present self (including our strengths and weaknesses)
  2. Self-actualization: Understanding and achieving our true potential
Analogy
If we consider Self-regard as point A and Self-actualization as point B, then travelling from point A to point B can be considered as the major aspect of a human-being's life. If I consider point A as my starting point and point B as my destination point, then until and unless I am not very clear about point A, I cannot go to point B. This means I should be thoroughly knowing about my point A and have a complete clarity as this is my starting point. If I do not know my point A, I will not be able to make a clear pathway to my point B.

Point A is accepting our own self the way we are, both in terms of our strengths and weaknesses, our virtues and vices, our pleasure points and unpleasant points (trigger points), our happy moments and sad moments, our likes and dislikes, etc. Until and unless we cannot accept completely we cannot really make progress.

Acceptance
Most of us, we don't feel comfortable in accepting ourselves. We would leave some aspects of our life untouched and these untouched aspects or emotions become blind spots over a period of time and get surfaced out whenever a huge turbulence or turmoil suddenly strikes us. It is of utmost importance for us as a human-being to accept and respect our self the way we are irrespective of whatever challenges, troubles, tribulations that we are facing based upon various circumstances and the environment in which we are.

Self-reflection
The best way to understand our own self is self-reflection. We as human-beings have this unique capability when compared to other animals and can spend some time in self-reflection to know ourselves completely.

The best ways are:
  1. Journaling
  2. Mindful observation of our thoughts (in terms of desires, wants and needs)
  3. Reflecting on our actions of the past and in the present

Journaling

Journaling helps us to understand more and more our deep rooted emotions that are unanswered and probably have become millstones over a period of time being unaddressed. The best time for journaling would be 30 minutes before going to sleep.

Mindful observation

Mindful observation can be carried out throughout the day and especially taking some time to spend in silence,

  • to observe and reflect on how our life is being spent and how we are really living?
  • how much time we are spending on meaningful activities and how much time we are spending on non-meaningful activities?
  • how much time we are spending on meaningful, value added conversations and how much time we are spending on non-meaningful, non-value added conversations?

Reflection

Reflection on our actions of the past could be a bit challenging, especially when it is associated with some pain. Hence, one need to be careful and cultivate enough compassion for oneself before attempting this sort of exercise.

Having done so, once we obtain clarity on our point A, we can further reflect on our point B.

To reach our point B:

  1. We need to understand what is that we require and why we require it?
  2. We have to question whether our point B is really going to add meaning to our life and is it going to fulfill the true purpose of life as a true human being?
  3. To create and make a pathway to our point B we can take help of peers by consulting them or get coached by experts.
  4. We need to gather all the necessary tools and start with tiny steps and reach our true full potential
Conclusion
Self-reflection plays a major role in self-awareness. Self-awareness helps us to maneuver our life and navigate ourselves to more meaningful aspects of life and enhance our overall well-being. Our well-beingness can add some meaning to others well-being there by we can become instrumental in making a better world. By the way the journey of self-awareness is a life-long journey. Just a word of caution. 😊

Choice of Our Actions

Choice of our Actions

Introduction

Life always gives us choices to choose from every situation. What we choose could be based upon many factors. The factors could be our belief systems, our strong emotions based upon our belief systems or emotions based upon the situation that we are going through in that moment.

It is not easy to be non-impulsive when emotions are very high and violent. The two choices that one can have in regular situations could be reactive or strategic. To be reactive not much effort is required. We can just go with the emotion that is strongly prevailing in that situation. However, to be non-reactive, non-impulsive and strategic we need to be really focussed on the final outcome of the situation instead of getting hijacked or succumbing to the emotion of the situation.

Choices

A reactive response is generally based upon impulses and could be judgmental, biased, prejudiced, more of a fixed-mindset and often leads in dis-harmony, non-productivity and regret.

A strategic response is non-impulsive, non-judgmental, unbiased, unprejudiced, more of growth-mindset and leads to harmony, productivity and contentment.

Solution

Mindfulness/Meditative practices will enable us to reflect on the reactions of our bodies and the emotions that we undergo in every situation. These practices will also help us to choose consciously the appropriate response.

Conclusion

Hence, next time let us consciously choose to be strategic and live a life of harmony and contentment.

What is Awareness?

What is Awareness?

Awareness is pure, untainted and enables us to see transparently through everything - the truth of the true existence of the manifested cosmos - that it is all spirit and nothing else. The spirit dwelling in each and every part and parcel of the manifested cosmos.

Pure awareness allows us to see through the thoughts, rather than the thoughts. The seeing through the thoughts enables us to let go the identities to which we are generally bound. It allows us space to travel infinitely without boundaries.  To question and challenge every aspect of life, and see through the validity and triviality of each aspect. This process of seeing through will enhance our seeing, observing, witnessing and enable us to identify our entanglements and provides us a platform to consciously choose upon which entanglements we would like to keep and not. Further, the pure awareness will also help us in letting go all the entanglements and become free to become infinite, boundless there by expanding our love and compassion unto the whole manifested cosmos. The pure awareness will let us stay comfortably in the unmanifested cosmos and witness the manifested cosmos without any entanglements.

Pure awareness is like boundless emptiness which can hold everything without getting entangled with anything. It is that one, that is present and one need not make any attempt to become aware of its presence. To become aware of the eternal presence of the pure awareness, one has to let go all the entanglements of body and mind and be comfortable in staying in the boundless cosmos, holding onto nothing. In that freedom from knowledge, ignorance, thoughts, entanglements when one stays in that emptiness, then the awareness itself becomes aware of its existence and allow us to become aware of its existence. This process does not involve any acquiring, it only involves an acknowledgement from the nothingness, by the nothingness and happens when we are completely in that nothingness. Pure awareness is infinite, boundless and free.

Overcoming Pain through Compassion not through avoidance

Overcoming Pain through Compassion not through avoidance.

Pain is something which is an unwanted feeling, but somehow we are more or less addicted to it. If everything is fine, hunky-dory we get bored and want to have something else and look for more challenging tasks or something more stimulating. Now this is all good where we wanted to have it and somehow or the other we make arrangements to prepare for it.

What if pain comes up from a clear blue sky, highly unanticipated situations? How to face it? What if there are situations or events that you expect will go smoothly and it turns out exactly opposite? It hurts right? It hurts very badly. We enter into that realm of melancholy and don't know how long it keeps haunting us and pushes us into some sort of depression if not too deep into it. These are those situations that we would love to avoid, but inevitability keeps striking back. Life throws at us experiences that we never anticipated and it becomes really a struggle to face them or accept them.

How to deal with pain without avoiding it is the crux of this article.

Radical Acceptance

In psychology "radical acceptance" is the term which is used for these kind of situations. Instead of fighting with the reality of an untoward incident, you accept the situation the way it is. The way life has thrown on your face straight without any warning. Accept it and face it. Instead of ruminating on "why me?," "why to me only?," "why to my life only?," one can say, okay it has happened, what next, what should be my next move? Where should I go next? If the situation is not giving you anytime to think, then go with whatever flow you can just flow. If it is giving you sometime to think, then analyze it and choose the most appropriate way to maneuver through it and come out successfully.

Well it is not so easy. I know.

Sometimes the pain is so hurting, that it might as well take years to let go and heal ourselves. Under such circumstances the one beauty of radical acceptance is to melt into it. Because in denial of pain we are struggling more to come out of the entanglement and enhance the tangling's rather than reduce them.

While the pain is inevitable because of whatever the circumstances which could be not under our control, the suffering is based on choice completely. Suffering is where one can make a choice, either to suffer or not to suffer.

The process

Sit or lie down in a safe place and undergo through the painful situation and while you are carrying out this process don't try to deny anything, even if the mistake is from your side, accept it, don't deny it. Just accept it and melt into it. Then, one fine moment of it through this process when complete denial stops and you have melted completely into it and accepted it (if you have to cry, then do that also) then a gentle relief comes up. From that gentle relief and in that moment have compassion towards you. Build that compassion for yourself. Love yourself the way you are. Accept yourself the way you are - your strengths and weaknesses, your skills, your capabilities and inabilities, your ups and downs, your praises and blames, everything. Keep accepting everything compassionately. Say unto yourselves, it is all fine. It is okay to be imperfect also and there is a perfection in imperfection. Keep remembering that. Love yourself so much that you can forgive everything about you and others also. Cultivate, develop, improve that compassion so that it becomes very easy for you to accept and go through that pain smoothly and when you are completely free, all the entanglements loosen up and you can come out of them easily.

  • Remember in the denial the strangling's get more complicated, in acceptance they can get loosened up.
  • In practice of acceptance we let go the resistance
  • In letting go the resistance we allow the compassion to get in
  • With compassion we should and able to love ourselves first, and then we can spread that compassion to others

Acceptance does not mean agreeing

Now acceptance does not mean agreeing. If something bad has happened, that does not mean you agree for it to happen again and again. You are not becoming someone's door mat. You accept for the current situation or the situation that has occurred in past and take all those measures so that you correct your course and shift the direction of the sails and proceed towards higher realms of compassionate living, harmonious success, peace, tranquility and poise.

The Essence of Spiritual Practices

What is the essence of Spiritual Practices?

The essence of Spiritual Practices or for that matter any practice is to "breathe consciously" and become aware of the presence of awareness.

While breathing consciously you are focusing on any of the following:

  • the breath itself
  • the breath moving in and out at entry and exit point of nostrils
  • the soft sound of breath hhhssss at entry and exit point of nostrils
  • the breath moving in and out and along with that movement of breath, movement within the body from upper portion of lungs to the abdomen and reverse
  • the spiritual heart (anāhata chakra)
  • the pit of throat
  • the sound of breath that it makes at the pit of the throat
  • moving consciously along the spine from mulādhāra (coccyx) to kūṭastha (ājna chakra) along with the movement of breath
  • focusing just at kūṭastha (ājna chakra)
  • chanting some syllables along with the inhalation and exhalation
  • the movement of energy from uvula to up into the sahasrāra
  • just awareness or nothingness
After any one of the above practices are strengthened and high efficiency is obtained due to effective conscious method of practice, one can go beyond the mind or thoughts and become aware of the presence of awareness. One can just become aware of the stillness and silence that is ever present within.

The Essence of Bhagavadgita in Two Words

The Essence of Bhagavadgita in Two Words

If we have to summarize the 700 verses of Bhagavadgita in two words, those two words would be "svadharmamācaret स्वधर्ममाचरेत्."

Goal

स्वधर्म Svadharma is the duty of the Self. 99.99% of our day-to-day activities are related to our body and we take out very less time to really look into our true self. If we can take out some time and start reflecting within and understand what is that, that we really require to live the most meaningful life? Then we would find the most surprising answers.

Instead of having reference point of we as our bodies, if we can change our reference points to our true self or soul, then it makes a lot of difference. And, what we feel, and get so much attached to, and give highest important aspects of the external materialistic life will vanish away into oblivion just like that.

Mindfulness or Meditation practices are the only way to take that 180 degree turn and shift our attention to within and become aware of the true presence of what is that is eternally present within us. We have to own this process of shifting. Someone else will not be able to do this for us.

The Process

If the goal is to carry out the activities of the self, then what is the process? How to do it?

To carry out the activities of the Self, the process is very simple and it is again given in two words - abhyāsa vairāgya अभ्यास वैराग्य - meaning practice of detachment. What does this mean and how to practice it in a day-to-day life?

Every time we get involved in an activity, we can ask the following questions:

  • how much mindful I am in carrying out this activity?
  • am I identifying myself with the emotions involved in the scene and getting hijacked with it? or
  • am I able to dis-identify from the scene and look at the screen?
  • how many times I identify with my body? and
  • how many times I identify with my true self?
  • in my thinking, how much time I am spending in the past or future, rather than in the present?
Strategy

Once we have the data on the above questions over a minimum period of 6 months, then we can develop our strategies. The data will provide us information on:
  • our reference points where we got hijacked with our emotions, identities, egos, opinions or pre-conceived notions
  • the number of times we got identified with our bodies rather than with our true self,
  • the number of hour or days that we were thinking about either the past or future rather than being completely present and aware of the present moment
The strategies to change the patterns would be:
  • changing the reference points from the scene to the screen
  • making a conscious effort to dis-identify from the body, thoughts and shift the focus to the true-self
  • entering more into the now, stillness, silence or the nothingness

With the above strategies we can enhance our well-being and along with that we can also enhance the well-being of the human species and make the world a better place.

The duties of true self would be in harmony with nature and all the surroundings and understanding every being more on the level of heart rather than on the level of mind. This approach will enhance compassion towards every being and instead of having conflicts and rages over opinions or pre-conceived notions, there would be more of compassionate conversations and exchange of heart's energy rather the heated argumentative energy of a conflict.

People would start looking more on to the heart rather than the mind or body, more on the spiritual front and the sustainability of the human species and the ecosystem rather than the mundane non-meaningful existence.

Meditation or Mindfulness in simple terms

What is Meditation or Mindfulness in simple terms?

When we remove all the advertisement paraphernalia, the concepts, ritualistic chauvinism around the phenomena of spirituality, what simply remains is "breathing consciously." That's all. Nothing else.

Human being as a physical entity of a community of trillion cells is being conscious of the breath that is either flowing in and out or not flowing at all, and is just aware of the breath happening or not happening. No other thought. Just conscious eternal awareness.

Either we are being conscious or not being conscious. If we are being conscious then there is an eternal awareness or else it is not. The choice "to be aware" or "not to be aware" is what we have to make.

Atma Nivedanam

What is Ātma Nivedanam?

In a very generic term "Ātma Nivedanam" can be simply translated as "Surrender."

Is that sufficient? No. Let us dive deeper into it.

It consists of two words. Ātma and Nivedanam.

Let us first look into the second word - Nivedanam. Nivedanam means an offering. When we offer something to someone, we ensure that it is clean, prepared in a very sacrilegious manner, untainted with any inharmonious vibrations and while offering we also ensure that we offer it with 100% willingness without any expectations.

Let us look into the first word - Ātma. The general meaning is soul or spirit. Now the spirit or soul is ever pure, untainted, unbiased, unprejudiced, non-judgmental. There are no thoughts to the spirit. It is eternal. However, every Atma / soul / spirit is associated with a body or if not the body some identifications with any thought processes where it gets tainted.

Now the term Ātma Nivedanam is not a noun, instead it is a verb - an action, a process where the intensity can vary from 0% to 100% based upon the conditional thinking of any individual soul. It all depends upon the extent and intensity of the entanglement of that soul with its thought processes or the conditional thinking.

Hence, Ātma Nivedanam involves a process of offering of our thoughts, thought processes, ideas, opinions, identities - all unto the Absolute without any anticipation in return. It includes even the thought of offering also.

In actual practice when the process of Ātma Nivedanam happens 100%, the soul enters the realm of Nothingness and merges with the Universal Spirit.

A metaphor of wave and ocean is being used to further explain this. Let us say the wave keeps thinking that it is a wave and not the ocean, then, what it all has to do is stop thinking that it is a wave. Because, it is never separate from the ocean. What all the wave has to do is stop thinking. The wave has to offer its thought process of thinking that it is the wave, then the Ātma Nivedanam happens and it will realize that it is never separate from the Ocean. What is stopping the wave is the thought or the thought process. Letting go the thought process is Ātma Nivedanam. As long as the wave has it itself as its reference point, it will think itself as a wave and it will be in the delusion that it is a wave. The moment it changes its reference point to the ocean, then it will see itself as a part of the ocean and not separate from the ocean. Ātma Nivedanam helps us changing our reference points from body and mind (thought processes) to that of the Spirit.

Human beings live 99% of the time "a life of comparison." This is the main problem of so many wants and desires. If one can anchor onto the soul, then 99% of worries vanish just like that. Then, Ātma Nivedanam can happen or else it is again an identity which would be directing in fulfillment of a wish that has arised in comparison with someone else's life. When the unnecessary and false reference points are avoided, then it becomes easy for Ātma Nivedanam to happen.

Mindfulness or Meditation from Bhagavadgita

 Meditation

About 5000 years ago in the land of Bharata there lived an individual called Krishna. He was given a title Bhagavan as he has demonstrated certain qualities. The qualities that need to be demonstrated to be called as Bhagavan are mentioned by Namalinga in a Sanskrit dictionary where he states “mahātmyasya samagrasya dhairyasya yaśasa śśriyaḥ, jñāna vairāgyayoścaiva ṣaṇṇāṃ bhaga: - ityuktabhago'syāsti iti” महात्म्यस्य समग्रस्य धैर्यस्य यशस श्श्रियः, ज्ञान वैराग्ययोश्चैव षण्णां भग: - इत्युक्तभगोऽस्यास्ति इति. This means having complete glory, courage/gallantry, fame/renowned, fortune/prosperity (in this case prosperity does not mean the materialistic prosperity. But the spiritualistic prosperity), wisdom/higher-knowledge, and freedom from all desires and the one who is or having all these can be called as Bhagavan. Hence, in this sense Krishna is perfectly called as Bhagavan.

Because of certain political reasons Krishna even though stayed in Mathura had to move to a place called Dwaraka where he stayed till the end of his life. He has a sister named Subhadra whom he gave in betrothal to Arjuna who was also a very good friend of him. Due to some socio-political reasons this friend Arjuna and his other 4 brothers had an argument over land and kingdom with their cousins called Kauravas and went for a war against each other to settle down the land issues.

Arjuna wanted Krishna to be his charioteer during this war as Krishna who is also titled as Bhagavan and his brother-in-law can guide him appropriately. Once the war is set and Krishna being a charioteer drives Arjuna into the battlefield; Arjuna, after seeing all those people who are participating in the war are none other than his own relatives gets into a despondency and becomes reluctant to fight.

Krishna then advices Arjuna, that it is not appropriate to not to fight once you are in the battlefield and starts coaching him about various aspects. One of the aspects is mindfulness and how to practice it.

Krishna tells Arjuna mind is something which needs to be controlled and states:

बन्धुरात्मात्मनस्तस्य येनात्मैवात्मना जितः ।

अनात्मनस्तु शत्रुत्वे वर्तेतात्मैव शत्रुवत् ॥ ६-६॥

bandhurātmātmanastasya yenātmaivātmanā jitaḥ .

anātmanastu śatrutve vartetātmaiva śatruvat .. 6-6..

For those who have conquered the mind, one’s own self is their friend. For those who have failed to do so, the mind behaves antagonistically like an enemy.

जितात्मनः प्रशान्तस्य परमात्मा समाहितः ।

शीतोष्णसुखदुःखेषु तथा मानापमानयोः ॥ ६-७॥

jitātmanaḥ praśāntasya paramātmā samāhitaḥ .

śītoṣṇasukhaduḥkheṣu tathā mānāpamānayoḥ .. 6-7..

Individuals who have conquered the mind can rise above the dualities of cold and heat, joy and sorrow, honor and dishonor and can remain steadfast, peaceful with equanimity under all circumstances.

सुहृन्मित्रार्युदासीनमध्यस्थद्वेष्यबन्धुषु ।

साधुष्वपि च पापेषु समबुद्धिर्विशिष्यते ॥ ६-९॥

suhṛnmitrāryudāsīnamadhyasthadveṣyabandhuṣu .

sādhuṣvapi ca pāpeṣu samabuddhirviśiṣyate .. 6-9..

These individuals who have gone above all dualities of life look upon all—well-wishers, friends, foes, the pious, and the sinners—with an impartial intellect – unbiased, non-judgmental and thus are distinguished among other individuals.

And in the following verses prescribes how this state can be attained.

योगी युञ्जीत सततमात्मानं रहसि स्थितः ।

एकाकी यतचित्तात्मा निराशीरपरिग्रहः ॥ ६-१०॥

yogī yuñjīta satatamātmānaṃ rahasi sthitaḥ .

ekākī yatacittātmā nirāśīraparigrahaḥ .. 6-10..

Those who seek this state of equanimity should spend some time daily in seclusion, alone and in silence where they constantly engage in meditation with a controlled mind and body, getting rid of unnecessary necessities.

शुचौ देशे प्रतिष्ठाप्य स्थिरमासनमात्मनः ।

नात्युच्छ्रितं नातिनीचं चैलाजिनकुशोत्तरम् ॥ ६-११॥

śucau deśe pratiṣṭhāpya sthiramāsanamātmanaḥ .

nātyucchritaṃ nātinīcaṃ cailājinakuśottaram .. 6-11..

To practice meditation or mindfulness one should make find a sanctified place, and a place to sit that is neither too low nor too high from the floor and use right and comfortable cloth or material for seating.

tatraikāgraṃ manaḥ kṛtvā yatacittendriyakriyaḥ .

upaviśyāsane yuñjyādyogamātmaviśuddhaye .. 6-12..

samaṃ kāyaśirogrīvaṃ dhārayannacalaṃ sthiraḥ .

samprekṣya nāsikāgraṃ svaṃ diśaścānavalokayan .. 6-13..

After sitting firmly on such a seat, the practitioner must hold the body, neck and head firmly in a straight line and  should practice to reduce the information inflow into the mind by focusing his eyes without wandering and with one pointed concentration at the point between the eyebrows on the center of the forehead, controlling all thoughts and activities.

प्रशान्तात्मा विगतभीर्ब्रह्मचारिव्रते स्थितः ।

मनः संयम्य मच्चित्तो युक्त आसीत मत्परः ॥ ६-१४॥

praśāntātmā vigatabhīrbrahmacārivrate sthitaḥ .

manaḥ saṃyamya maccitto yukta āsīta matparaḥ .. 6-14..

Thus, with a serene, fearless, and unwavering mind, and staunch in the vow of thinking about the Absolute, the vigilant practitioner should meditate on that Absolute, having that (Absolute) alone as the supreme goal.

युञ्जन्नेवं सदात्मानं योगी नियतमानसः ।

शान्तिं निर्वाणपरमां मत्संस्थामधिगच्छति ॥ ६-१५॥

yuñjannevaṃ sadātmānaṃ yogī niyatamānasaḥ .

śāntiṃ nirvāṇaparamāṃ matsaṃsthāmadhigacchati .. 6-15..

Thus, constantly keeping the mind absorbed in Absolute, and abiding in Absolute the practitioner of disciplined mind attains the supreme peace, everlasting bliss.

Further Krishna mentions about the diet for a mindfulness/meditation practitioner.

नात्यश्नतस्तु योगोऽस्ति न चैकान्तमनश्नतः ।

न चातिस्वप्नशीलस्य जाग्रतो नैव चार्जुन ॥ ६-१६॥

nātyaśnatastu yogo'sti na caikāntamanaśnataḥ .

na cātisvapnaśīlasya jāgrato naiva cārjuna .. 6-16..

My dear Arjuna, those who eat too much or eat too little, those who sleep too much or too little, cannot attain success in the meditative practices.

युक्ताहारविहारस्य  युक्तचेष्टस्य कर्मसु ।

युक्तस्वप्नावबोधस्य योगो भवति दुःखहा ॥ ६-१७॥

yuktāhāravihārasya  yuktaceṣṭasya karmasu .

yuktasvapnāvabodhasya yogo bhavati duḥkhahā .. 6-17..

Only those who are moderate in eating, recreation, balanced in work, and appropriate regularity and moderation in sleep, can practice mindfulness/meditation and can overcome suffering.

यतो यतो निश्चरति मनश्चञ्चलमस्थिरम् ।

ततस्ततो नियम्यैतदात्मन्येव वशं नयेत् ॥ ६-२६॥

yato yato niścarati manaścañcalamasthiram .

tatastato niyamyaitadātmanyeva vaśaṃ nayet .. 6-26..

Arjuna, mind of its very nature keeps wandering and whenever and wherever the restless and fidgety mind wanders, one should bring it back from all those objects of wandering and continually focus it on the Absolute.

प्रशान्तमनसं ह्येनं योगिनं सुखमुत्तमम् ।

उपैति शान्तरजसं ब्रह्मभूतमकल्मषम् ॥ ६-२७॥

praśāntamanasaṃ hyenaṃ yoginaṃ sukhamuttamam .

upaiti śāntarajasaṃ brahmabhūtamakalmaṣam .. 6-27..

The practitioner whose mind can remain calm, whose passions are regulated and who constantly dwells in the Absolute will achieve the transcendental happiness and joy of union with the Absolute.

After Krishna explains how one can practice, and mentions also the benefits of practice, Arjuna comes with a doubt where he states:

चञ्चलं हि मनः कृष्ण प्रमाथि बलवद् दृढम् ।

तस्याहं निग्रहं मन्ये वायोरिव सुदुष्करम् ॥ ६-३४॥

cañcalaṃ hi manaḥ kṛṣṇa pramāthi balavad dṛḍham .

tasyāhaṃ nigrahaṃ manye vāyoriva suduṣkaram .. 6-34..

The mind is very unsteady, turbulent, tenacious and powerful, O Krishna. It appears to me that it is more difficult to control than the wind.

Then Krishna explains:

असंशयं महाबाहो मनो दुर्निग्रहं चलम् ।

अभ्यासेन तु कौन्तेय वैराग्येण च गृह्यते ॥ ६-३५॥

asaṃśayaṃ mahābāho mano durnigrahaṃ calam .

abhyāsena tu kaunteya vairāgyeṇa ca gṛhyate .. 6-35..

O mighty-armed son of Kunti, what you said about mind is correct. The mind indeed is very difficult to control. However, by repeated practice and constant exercise of dispassion or detachment, it can be controlled.

Krishna further in another chapter mentions about the two ways how people generally lead their lives and emphasizes the importance of leading a life that of a practitioner.

naite sṛtī pārtha jānanyogī muhyati kaścana .

tasmātsarveṣu kāleṣu yogayukto bhavārjuna .. 8-27..

vedeṣu yajñeṣu tapaḥsu caiva dāneṣu yatpuṇyaphalaṃ pradiṣṭam .

atyeti tatsarvamidaṃ viditvā yogī paraṃ sthānamupaiti cādyam .. 8-28..

O Arjuna! There are two paths of living – one that deludes the individuals and keeps them bound into the wrong way of living and another path that frees them and leads to righteousness, non-covetousness. As a practitioner one should know that these two paths exist and choose the path of righteousness to attain the Supreme Absolute. Hence, become a practitioner of Yoga and attain that Absolute Supreme abode of eternal bliss.

True Essence of Spirituality

 True Essence of Spirituality

The true essence of spirituality is realizing that I need not know anything.

That I am already full and complete; and there is nothing to add.

What this means is that what all we try to learn will be an additional information and creates identities which unknowingly transform into entanglements. We have to let go these identities and entanglements.

People might feel that "letting go" is very difficult. In fact it is not so. Because, each and every one of us have become experts in letting go that we are in reality Spirit. Hence, what we have to let go is the misidentification that we are not Spirit.

This is what the essence of the spirituality is. Let go the misidentification that we are not Spirit and lo behold that each and every one of us is already that Spirit.

Today being a festival of Ganesh Chaturthi a little bit on the true essence of the festival:

Ganesha is called as gaja vadana  (elephant headed) meaning:

  • gaja: opposite of jaga - the world. Interiorize!
  • vadana: face. In the interiorized face there is a space that shows the awareness and the empty space of Nothingness.
  • chaturthi - being beyond the four realms of jagrat, swapna, sushupti and turiya
Hence, this festival is in reality an invitation to stop everything in the external world and go within and beyond the four states of wakefulness, dream, deep sleep, turiya and enter that realm of eternal Nothingness and in the awareness of Spirit.

Myriad ways of wandering mind

Myriad ways of wandering mind

In how many ways the mind wanders while we sit for practicing mindfulness or meditative practices is what intention of the below picture. This is the reason why scientific techniques of meditation are prescribed and are of great aid in supporting our mindfulness/meditative practices.

The foundational practices are always in two ways:
  1. Breathing practices
  2. Questioning (wisdom) approach.
Both of the above help in approaching stillness quite faster.

You as a practitioner can choose what ever you want and whenever you want.

One can also practice chakra meditation and focus on the breath moving along the spine.

Letting go - the most misunderstood concept

Letting go - the most misunderstood concept

Letting go! What is that I need to let go? This is the first question that we get when the thought or advice of letting go comes in.

Whenever someone goes for an advice in circumstances of deep trouble, they generally get an advice of "letting go." And, it is very confusing for any individual especially the one who is into such a mind ruffle, letting go is impossible as difficult as understanding why the ruffle has come and what is the root cause of the disturbance?

Most people think "letting go" means, letting go every control and do nothing. The things will be taken care of all by themselves. In reality this is not true. Because every situation that has occurred has myriad causes for it to turn into an effect. And, all these causes are created by us in the past consciously or unconsciously by our own thought processes (either influenced by external sources or not) and our own actions.

Hence, "letting go" means - we let go our corrupted thought processes. Our thoughts are generally influenced by various external sources, biases, and prejudices that we have developed over a period of time. Once we let go all these and try to let our real Truth to step in then we would be able to understand the fact as a fact without any shades of ours or others. This is what letting go means. It is not letting go all the control. It is just letting go the egoistic thought processes and letting in the Spirit's thought process so that we perform the right activities and take appropriate decisions that are harmonious to both internal and external worlds.

Slowing or stopping the regular activities and entering into mindfulness/meditative practices will neutralize our egoistic thought processes and then after letting go our egoistic control, we come to understand the Real work that needs to be carried out. This requires a rigorous and long term practice. Then, performing the activities from that realm of divine understanding results in harmony and well being of everyone and everything in and around.

Accepting the transience of Life

Life is transient. Everything in nature is transient. It undergoes change. That is the way of life and nature around us in this Cosmos/Universe. Everything and every particle has to undergo change and will undergo change. Nothing can stop anything from its change. Everything changes its form. That is the drama of life. An acceptance of the transient nature of life will give us peace.
Denial of Life's drama leads to trauma.
We need to accept it first. Then, if it requires a change - change it without any attachment. Be completely detached during changing or else there is an every chance of getting entangled to the drama which results in further suffering.

The What and Purpose of Mindfulness

The What and Purpose of Mindfulness

MINDFULNESS is our ability to enhance our awareness of what is going on both inside our body, mind, and around us externally. A constant awareness of our body, emotions, and thoughts will enable us avoid harming ourselves and others, by which we can enhance both ours and others well being. Living mindfully with heightened awareness in everyday life, enhances love, compassion and caring for us, for our fellow beings and nature. By doing so we can transform the world into a better place where everyone and everything can live harmoniously.

MINDFULNESS PRACTICES enhances one's life. A regular practice will transform human beings from "doing" mode to "being" mode. Mindfulness does not involve any religion, or any dogma. It is pure science. Mindfulness which is a western world coined word is called as Meditation in the eastern world.

It is:
  • Simple yet profound!
  • Easy yet highly effective!
  • Basic yet very strong!
TO BE MINDFUL EVERY MOMENT is not easy and can be done only by regularity and persistence. It is said Rome city is not built in a day. Similarly, mindfulness practices require rigorous practice. This does not mean that they are heavy body building exercises. In fact mindfulness practices involve only 10 to 20% about body and the rest is all about MIND.

MINDFULNESS PRACTICES mainly involve breathing and awareness. Other mindfulness practices relating to the daily activities can be incorporated once an anchoring into breath can be achieved to some degree. All living beings have to breathe. Human beings can regulate their breath and mindfulness practices involve conscious breathing, and becoming aware of these states of conscious breathing. Sometimes there would be states where the breath slows down and may even stop for a while, all naturally without any intervention of the practitioner. In these states the awareness of the practitioner gets heightened, the whole body and mind relaxes, and the practitioner enters into a highly profound peaceful state. In some of these states, the brain releases serotonin that heals the human body and enhances the immunity power of the practitioner.

MINDFULNESS PRACTICES PROVIDE CLARITY ON 4 LEVELS
Mindfulness practices involves on four levels that of body, mind, emotions, and thoughts.

As one practices mindfulness practices over a period a time - as minimum as 6 weeks - one can achieve better clarity about one's body - what and when to eat, how to eat, how much to eat, how much to exercise, etc.

A practice of 8 to 10 weeks will reveal the psychological challenges one have and will be able to find a methodology in overcoming those challenges so that the practitioner can be better equipped.

Over a period of practice of about 16 weeks to 26 weeks one can become more aware of one's emotions and can choose wisely and consciously with which emotions they can hold onto and which emotions they can let go.

A practice of 52 weeks and longer... one can understand upon regular introspection what thoughts are, and what and how much significant they are. A better wisdom and deeper introspection and interiorization will enable the practitioner to understand the reality of thoughts and their transient nature. With a better and wise understanding the practitioner can choose a conscious entanglement towards the thoughts that enter the mind.

NURTURE AND PROTECT YOUR MINDFULNESS PRACTICES

Having said the above, the results will come only to those who have a regularity in practice of their mindfulness practices. One has to nurture one's mind with the right inputs, protect it from all invasions, build resilience and keep practicing even in midst of myriad ups and downs. Remember it is not a destiny, but a journey and most of the times, it is "work in progress." This is where a constant periodical coaching helps and supports one's mindfulness journey.

Responsibility and Accountability

Responsibility and Accountability

When I looked at my life as a retrospective, my whole life's wisdom boiled down into two words - responsibility and accountability.

If I can take responsibility for being accountable of whatever I do, then life becomes very simple. I choose my choices wisely as I would be held responsible and also I am accountable for whatever I do.

If we can teach these two words and the deepest meaning of these two words to all the people in the world, then the world will turn into a very peaceful world.

The moment I take accountability or someone says "you are accountable for whatever you do," immediately I will start behaving more responsibly.

Example 1
Let us look into an example where we have an unlimited broadband connection. The moment it is an unlimited internet connection, we binge browse and download all unnecessary information. Whether we want it or not for that moment, we just download it. And, we would like to justify our downloads with a so called futuristic approach, that we may need it for our future requirement which could be about 10 years later and by which the technology also changes and the information that is downloaded may become irrelevant sometimes. The moment we say it is unlimited, we tend to watch continuously movies in all those wooing movie channels irrespective of whether we really like the movie or not (binge watching) and whether the movie is going to add some value or not to our life. But, let us say the broadband companies put a caveat stating that if you watch a movie, then you have to pay $1 extra for each movie that you watch, then we immediately get into a choice and choose wisely what to watch and what not to watch.

Example 2
If someone tells me, I am accountable for whatever I talk and whatever words I use, because my words are going to influence the person listening to - first psychologically and then physiologically (as the brain releases different hormones that influence the body), then I would definitely be more responsible in choosing my words and the intonation with which I deliver those words.

The people in the world face more abuses in terms of words that are uttered by people around them, than the the physical abuses or atrocities. So, can we choose our words more wisely and convey them with more love irrespective of whether the other person listens to us or not.

I have seen people (both men and women) abusing each other more with words rather than physically hurting each other and hampering their relationships. Sometimes by not saying the right word at the right time also many relationships just collapse.

Example 3
If someone tells the story writer of a movie that he or she is accountable for whatever the effect it is going to cause on the people who will watch the movie, and he/she will be held responsible for it, then perhaps the story writer writes in a more responsible way.

Example 4
If we hold all the industrialists accountable for whatever the pollution that is being created and they are responsible for it, then they would obviously be manufacturing only those goods that will not cause pollution.

Example 5
If we tell parents that are going to be responsible for their child's birth and the way the born child is going to behave in the society and whatever good or bad the child does, they would be held accountable for it, because t nohey have given birth to such a child, then the mother and father will think 1000 times before conceiving so that they give birth only to a noble child or a child of high character.

In this way if we make people accountable for whatever they do or going to do, then their choices becomes more wiser and they automatically behave more responsibly. There is no need to teach about any religion or any religious practices. Just these two words and it will change drastically their approach towards life.

How to Improve My Knowing?

How to Improve My Knowing?

Sri Sri Parmahansa Yogananda ji says
"Self-realization is the knowing—in body, mind, and soul—that we are one with the omnipresence of God; that we do not have to pray that it come to us, that we are not merely near it at all times, but that God's omnipresence is our omnipresence; that we are just as much a part of Him now as we ever will be. All we have to do is improve our knowing."
How to improve our knowing? OR How to improve my knowing?

If I can question myself, how I can improve my Knowing before carrying out every activity, then how it would be?

When I wake up in the morning and before even getting up from bed, if I question myself how I can improve my Knowing today? Then, there is a surrender that happens and a humble prayer, stating - "help me in improving my Knowing."

I get down from the bed and enter the washroom and if I question myself how I can improve my Knowing now? Then a moment of stillness enters and the activities of cleaning happens in a gentle awareness.

While taking the shower, if I question myself how I can improve my Knowing now? There is a surrender into the stream of water flowing from the shower and the flow is merged with the Cosmic Flow and there is an awe in that flow of the Cosmic Flow.

As I place the used clothes in the bin for washing, if I question myself how I can improve my Knowing now? Instead of just having an attitude of getting rid of used clothes, I can express my gratitude to those clothes who have served me for those many hours protecting me from external environment of heat, cold, dust and may be from harmful microbes. I can tell them - "get washed and cleaned, and I would be glad to wear you again."

As I dry myself and dress up and question myself how I can improve my Knowing now? There is a gratitude that enters the mind for those who have made these clothes for me to wear and that gratitude is wrapping me in its freshness and healthy warmth.

As I enter my prayer place and just before sitting there if I question myself how I can improve my Knowing now? Then, there is stillness that enters, and the search for stillness is no more there, and there is only merging into stillness that happens.

As I come out of my meditative or mindfulness practices and start entering into the daily activities of world, and if I question myself how I can improve my Knowing today in these daily activities? Then, there is a surrender to the Cosmic Will and a humble prayer stating - "help me in improving my Knowing. Whatever I do, whatever activity I carry out, let me not lose sight of Thee - help me in improving my Knowing." Then the planning happens and whether the chores get completed or not as there is surrender, the attachment and the entanglement towards the outcome is no more there. There is only a sincere attempt of carrying out the task to the best of my ability. A sense of equanimity gets in and balances me.

As I about to light the stove to cook something and if I ask how I can improve my Knowing? Then there is a silence and from that silence a flow of serving comes in and the act of cooking with lots of love and a thought process of enriching the food with lots of physical and psychological nourishment automatically happens.

Sitting before the plate just before eating, if I ask how I can improve my Knowing while eating? Then, I will convey my gratitude to all those people who made the food to bring it into my plate right from the farmer to the cook and the individual who has served it. I can also see the beauty of nature and its grace in each and every grain and how much each and every particle has toiled to bring these grains onto my plate. Especially trillions of micro-organisms that has converted the dirt into nourishing soil and supplied nutrients to the plants in making the plants to grow and flourish bountifully.

As I board the vehicle to travel and ask myself what I can do to improve my Knowing during this travel? Then I would travel mindfully and use the appropriate transport that is most environment friendly and travel only if it is dire necessary.

When I go for shopping and if I ask how I can improve my Knowing during shopping? Then I would buy only if it is really necessary and look out for high quality clothes rather than the quantity, so that I buy ethically as much close to natural fiber so that my shopping do not create burden on to the environment, the weaver, and the seller.

As I retire to bed and ask myself, what did I do today to improve my Knowing? Then, I can honestly introspect on my self and my behavior compassionately, and thank the grace where ever I could behave and helped myself in improving my Knowing and where I could not, I can ask for more grace so that I can further improve my Knowing.

On any occasion like a birthday or some another important event, if I can ask myself what I did to improve my knowing? Then, I can reflect back and as a retrospective, I can express my gratitude to all that has passed and has brought me to this present state and chalk out a pathway for a better future that enhances my awareness and further improve my Knowing.

Every time when I ask "what I can do to improve my Knowing?" Then, my mind takes a back step for a while. There is so much of de-cluttering that happens, an amazing amount of clarity surfaces, and I enter into a realm of stillness and from that state, a Flow guides me to perform the right activity that enhances mine and others well-being and further improves my Knowing.

Improving the Knowing

Improving the Knowing

As I improve my Knowing,
Stillness comes along with me,
In everything that I carry out.

As I improve my Knowing,
my mind can escape
into the landscape around,
experiencing my vastness.

As I improve my Knowing,
I silently listen to the,
chirping of birds, and the cuckoos of Cuckoo,
the buzz of bees,
and enter the sound of OM.

As I improve my Knowing,
My mind dwindles into the silence around,
embraces it and gets lost into the Nothingness.

As I improve my Knowing,
I ask the right question,
and get the right answer,
that there is none and only One.

As I improve my Knowing,
the me, mine and the I
melts into the Unknown and the Infinite,
Becoming one with the One.

My Zazen

My Zazen

Sit,
breathe.

Be still,
Observe breath.

Be still,
Observe sitting.

Breathe,
Observe breath.

Be still,
Observe stillness.

Be still,
Observe the observer.

Be still,
There is no observer.
Only the observing.
Only the stillness.

What is Zazen?
First we understand the word "zen." The word "zen" comes from a Sanskrit word "dhyana ध्यान" which means quiet contemplation. Zazen means sitting quietly in stillness by anchoring the mind on the breath and carrying out the quiet contemplation.

The Paradox of coexistence of Light and Darkness

The Paradox of coexistence of Light and Darkness

What does exist - is it light or darkness? Which one of them exist?

For the above questions, there is only one answer. And, the answer is - what we are able to see, we believe only that exists. The one that we don't see, we believe it does not exist. Just because we do not see something, that does not mean it does not exist. It exists, but we are unable to see or perceive. If we can understand this paradox of seeing and non-seeing then, we can dive deep into our true Self and question - what is that, that is existing which is not being seen or perceived?

The analogy that is being used here is that of light and darkness. When light is reflected on an object, the darkness disappears and we would be able to see that object. And, when that light is removed, the darkness reappears. The light and darkness have not gone anywhere. They are there itself. When we are seeing one, we are unable to see the other. When we are seeing darkness, we are unable to see the light and when we are seeing the light, we are unable to see the darkness that is very much present there itself. Hence, considering this analogy in this whole Cosmos we can come to an understanding that light and darkness coexist. Considering the darkness as the unmanifest or avyakta अव्यक्त and the light as manifest or vyakta व्यक्त - they coexist. There is no separation between them. This is the Truth that Upanishads emphasize in a statement called "sarvam khalvidam Brahma" सर्वं खल्विदं ब्रह्म - "everything is indeed Brahman or Absolute."

Hence, there is no self or Self. The self is the Self. We just have to become aware of it.
